Puyallup Church of Christ

What to Expect

Welcome to the Puyallup church of Christ. We are so thankful for your visit to our site. Hopefully, one day you will wish to visit us in person. Maybe you have no idea what to expect and would like to know a little about us first. Please know that you would receive a very warm welcome, many smiling faces, and some friendly handshakes.

Our Bible classes are offered for all ages, two years old and up. Only the Bible and Bible subjects will be taught in our classes.

Our worship services are held in what we refer to as the “auditorium.” There are no reserved seats, so please sit anywhere you choose. You may be asked to fill out a visitor’s card, so the church can write or call to thank you for your visit with us. One of the unique attributes about the churches of Christ is that the music is “a cappella” (no musical instrumentation).

Every Sunday morning, the Lord’s Supper is included in our worship service. The churches of Christ observe this memorial every Sunday in our desire to follow the New Testament teachings. “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread…” Acts 20:7. 1 Corinthians 11:23-24 tells us, “…Jesus, in the night in which he was betrayed, took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, ‘This is My body which is for you; do this in remembrance of me.’” The bread represents the body of Jesus. Break off a piece of the bread and eat it. Next, small cups will contain “fruit of the vine,” usually grape juice, symbolizing the blood of Jesus, because 1 Corinthians 11:25 says, “In the same way He took the cup also after supper, saying, ‘This cup is the new covenant in my blood; do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.’” If you choose not to participate, don’t be embarrassed. Feel free to just pass the plate or tray to the person next to you.

Every Sunday morning we pass the collection plates for the weekly financial offering. As our guest, you are not expected to make a donation or offering; please feel free to pass this on to the next person near you.

Our preacher is not referred to as a pastor or reverend. You will probably hear him referred to as brother or just by his name. Plain Bible teaching is the purpose of each sermon, and you’re encouraged to follow in your own Bible as the lesson is presented. The sermon will likely be approximately 20-30 minutes.

At the close of the sermon, the preacher will “extend an invitation.” He will encourage those who wish to respond to come to the front of the auditorium. This can be anything from people wanting to become Christians or asking for prayers or help dealing with problems in their lives to expressing thankfulness for what God is doing in their lives. It is a way for us to help one another in our Christian walk.

We were not brought together by an illusion of our perfection or righteousness. We were brought together by our recognition that we are sinners in need of the cleansing blood of Jesus Christ.
